What's the (organic) beef?

Now that I'm eating meat again, I'm trying to learn more about what consitutes 'certified organic,' 'certified humane" or "certified sustainable."  I'm a bit suspicious of 'certified' or  'organic' anything.  Right now I'm buying most of my meat directly from the farmers. This means I can actually talk to the farmers and find out how the animal was ( Read more... )

I'm in the US. YMMV.

I read a couple of books over the winter, one of which was The Ethics of What We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter. In the end, they basically advocate a vegan diet, but most of the book is spent just looking at a number of issues and ethics without making judgment or recommendations. That book alerted me to a lot of questions and loopholes, at least in the US, around some of the criteria you listed ( ... )

Hmm. I haven't heard of that book - or perhaps I had but it didn't stick. I'll have to pick it up... and then add it to my pile. Next on my food-related reading list is "An Omnivore's Dilemma." Over the years I've read (and written) a lot on vegetarian issues, but it's only recently that I'm finding authours and activists willing to really dig into the grey area in a way that isn't necessarily following the politically correct answer ( ... )
