Stupid Xenophobic People

Mar 06, 2010 21:14

I finally lost it when my Xenophobic coworker started talking about immigrants speaking English. It's a recurring theme with her -- anyone with an accent, even if their English grammar is better than hers, needs to learn to speak 'real' English because that's what we speak in America. She honestly believes -- because I asked her specifically about ( Read more... )

So now I'm curious: what does she think about people who speak English with an English accent (or rather: any of the dozens of accents found in England)? Scottish? Australian? What about the tremendous range of dialectal difference you get even in the States (Bahston, New Yuwk, Southern, Midwestern etc ( ... )

She's all right with other primary English accents, as long as they don't use terms she's not familiar with. As in British people should call it an elevator if they're in America.

I'd love to hear your thoughts about accents in laguage acquisition. It sounds fascinating!

She hates 'Mexicans' (as she refers to anyone who is Hispanic) and Arabs too. She thinks they are all dirty. Really, she gives me a new persepective on workplace shootings.

I'm astounded by people who think people should be required to speak the native language before emigrating.

If someone's language was a deciding factor in whether or not they have the right to live where ever the fuck they want, then her family would've stayed in Europe.

If only.

She's a pice of work. I find that the more she talks, the more she looks like a troll. She also makes me more sympathetic to people involved in workplace shootings.

She also thinks I spend too much time going to doctors because they are invested inmy being sick. As if I wouldn't have asthma, depression or high cholesterol if I just didn't go to the doctor. And instead of trying to get on a normal sleep schedule for my insomnia, I should just take a night shift job. I've pointed out that if I didn't do maintenance on my cholesterol and my asthma i'd qiote possibly have a heaart attack or just stop breathing. And that night shifts are actually bad for people with insomnia, contributing to the initial problem. But she knows better. She thinks I should just drink and get a night shift. I told her that when she got her medical degree I'd listen to her medical advice.

Wow. Your co-worker is a dumbass.

I can't stand people like that either. I have to hear daily/weekly (not really directly face to face, but just all around me at college and sometimes when I'm out and about) about how I'm not "American" enough because I "lack" the "American" look and because of my accent. Yes, I know that I talk a bit slow but that does not mean that I can not understand English. Jeez.

Also, I am not a terrorist because of my name.
