When Matteo Ricci  came to China
It wasn’t that novel a thing.
People had been coming and going
For just about fifteen centuries
Carrying luggage and beliefs
Trading goods and ideas
No, it wasn’t that big a novelty.

The man himself, though

On the whole, this reads well.

That's a comma splice. If the sentence is not a direct quote, a semi-colon would be more correct in that position.
