I don't see it as suggesting that all BDSM people are using it as means to deal with earlier abuse. I see it more as his wanting a subset (so to speak) of BDSM'ers, that subset which uses it to deal with earlier abuse/incest. I think that's what he's looking for. I think.
Mind you, I have no opinion as to how good the study will turn out - but it does seem to me he's wanting s certain slice rather than the whole pie.
Ignoring the question of whether or not this is a worthwhile study, because I won't know that until reading the final product:
"As a student at Goddard College I am gathering stories from individuals who have experienced sexual trauma and have, either successfully or unsuccessfully, intentionally used BDSM to cope with, treat, or otherwise re-direct their emotions around the issue."
does not equal
"doesn't it seem that this student's study is going from an almost-as-cheap-ass cliche, the one where the only people involved in BDSM (epecially subs) are abuse survivors?"
He's looking for people who have used BDSM to work through sexual trauma issues. (As yes, I personally know at least one such person.)
