There will probably always be a market for those who want sexual satisfaction without emotional commitment.

Alternatively, there's always Beta Colony's take on it from Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan books, where prostitution has no greater stigma than that of a hairdresser, though they are required to have associate psychology degree. And the hermaphrodites are popular with young couples just learning how to handle their own sexuality.

Actually, in a society that is more sex-positive, I think there would be a greater need for sex workers. Sort of like needing more mechanics in a society that's more pro-car ( ... )

You should really read Sex At Dawn. There's a lot written in it about matriarchal societies and what they look like (and how they are so completely different from patriarchal societies that many anthropologists don't believe they exist because they are looking for a top-down model that mirrors a patriarchy with the one exception being that it's women on top) as well as how in those matriarchies, sex is not only seen in a much more positive light, but that sex is much more abundant and accesible. It might help in thinking about alternative futures, but at the very least it's a hell of an interesting read.

Oh yeah - Dan Savage was extolling the virtues of this book a while ago - I've been meaning to read it. Glad to hear someone else liked it too.

Aside from the last chapter that the authors were forced to tack on at the last minute by the publisher, it was such a good book for so many different reasons, not the least of which was how scientists and researchers let their own personal biases and hypotheses get in the way of the data and evidence they collect. And it's incredibly funny and well written, too.

The same need that freedom of the press implies lots of paid reporters; that a religiously open society needs paid pastors; that plentiful food sources usually involve lots of people being paid to cook it.

"Sex workers" do not necessarily imply a high ick value, just because the society enjoys sex. You have the mass of amateurs, you have a vast source of something being consumed - you need a class of experienced people who can show the amateurs a good book/good meal/good religious experience/good fuck.

....."women had great status". "More sex positive". "what need...for prostitution". Women aren't the only ones in today's cultures who sell sex for money.
