The DaVinci Code Review

About fucking time I wrote this.

The DaVinci Code, I'm sure you've heard of it. It stars Tom Hanks, Ian McKellan, and Paul Bettany, and is directed by Ron Howard, based on the (in my opinion) great book by Dan Brown.

Spoilers beyond.

I'll start off by saying I liked this movie. It wasn't the greatest, but as far as movies go, it was pretty good. The general consensus seems to be that if you liked the book (which I did) then you'll probably like the movie.

The movie takes a lot of explaining, which means complicated dialogue and a bit of a slow-down in the action. The way they explained everything, though, reminded me of the movie National Treasure (starring Nicholas Cage and Sean Bean). Oh, and the one flashback sequence of a great war just screamed Return of the King to me and my sister, who's not nearly as obsessed with Rings as I am. Oh, and is it just me or do all movies nowadays have some connection with LotR? I'll explain this in a later post.

Anyway, as I read in a local review, Ian McKellan is a scene-stealer and it is true! I think he's great in this movie. Tom Hank's haircut bothered me a bit, but I got over it. The French accent used by many of the actors throughout the movie is also one that I apparently have trouble understanding. Oh, and Paul Bettany. He was cool, but his Spanish accent freaked me the hell out. It just didn't suit him. Even being a creepy albino, he's hot, though.

There were a couple of things that I missed seeing in the movie that were in the book. For instance, the "slashing gesture" from the "disembodied hand" in the Last Supper wasn't mentioned at all, and though they did talk about the whole "San Greal", not even once sentence was heard about the "Sang Real", which was a bit disturbing. I liked that part. Also, at the end, they didn't explain that the guy in the church was Sophie's brother and the woman was her grandmother...

But overall, the movie was good. I liked the music, they story (of course), and the actors. Especially McKellan and Bettany. I also really really hope they make a movie of Dan Brown's other book involving Robert Langdon, "Angels & Demons", which as a lot more action already written into the story. The other books would probably make good movies too.
