summary: Dom watches Billy perform.
disclaimer: this is all untrue.
Dom stayed at the back of the small establishment, in the shadows, hoping no one would recognize him. He’d cut his hair since Lost, so that helped a bit too. From his position, Dom could see the center of the stage through a small gap between the people in front of him. He sipped his drink-a non-alcoholic fruity mix that wasn’t very good at all-and waited for Billy to appear.
Several minutes later, Billy did appear; he led his bandmates out onto the stage and, chuckling at something one of them had presumably said, began adjusting his microphone and arranging his guitar on its stand. Dom listened as Billy started making casual comments to the audience, gauging their temperament and warming them up for the show. Dom couldn’t help but laugh openly at Billy’s jokes; he never could control himself around Billy.
The first song was one Dom had heard before, of course, but it wasn’t one of his favorites. He tuned out the lyrics and concentrated on Billy’s voice, on the tone and the melody and the familiarity of it. Billy was passionate about his music, but Dom could tell the song wasn’t his favorite either - Billy wasn’t putting as much of himself into the lyrics as he did for several of the others. Nonetheless, his voice was smooth and even, and it made Dom think of melted chocolate or caramel syrup or some other liquidy-sweet candy that made his teeth ache pleasantly.
The song ended to generous applause and Dom joined in, watching Billy’s face closely. He looked so happy up there on that stage. He looked like he didn’t quite believe it. Dom had shared similar thoughts with Billy during the years of Rings promotions and premieres: they were just a couple of average, working actors that were being swept away by it all. It was unbelievable.
For the next song, Billy picked up his guitar. Dom smiled, remembering the times Billy had pulled out his guitar in New Zealand to play for him or others of the cast. He sighed, then, because his mind had drifted yet again to what he considered “happier times.” Dom wrenched himself back to the present as Billy absently strummed the guitar strings, tuning up.
Dom set his drink back down on the small table and stared at Billy once he started to sing. Billy closed his eyes and leaned away from the mike for the louder, higher notes; his hands gripped the guitar firmly, tightly, but comfortably. Dom was mesmerized. Billy’s fingers on the strings looked like a caress that Dom could vividly imagine on his own skin. He’d had those fingers touch him before, touch his arm, or his neck, or his hand, so Dom knew exactly what they felt like.
Dom shook the thoughts from his head before he got carried away and glanced around quickly to make sure no one had spotted him. No one had. They were here for Beecake, for Billy, not him. A while later, Billy announced the last song of the set. As Dom listened, he prepared to make his escape. When the song finished, Dom downed the last of his drink, made a face at the taste of it, and clapped loudly. He then made his way quickly through the crowd to get out before the rush of people.
Once outside, he spotted Billy’s car and veered towards it. Dom grinned; he could see through the window that the cheap Hawaiian hula girl he had sent Billy last month was stuck to the dashboard prominently. Dom waited a few moments, leaning against Billy’s car and just thinking, until the sound of people exiting the building reached his ears. Billy would be coming out soon, then. Dom dodged around a few other cars to get out of sight.
Billy emerged after several minutes carrying his guitar case and his jacket slung over his arm. A couple of girls stopped him outside the door and asked for his autograph, which he gave gladly, then stayed to chat for a moment. Dom found himself smiling again: Billy was so good with his fans, like he didn’t have to work at all at being Billy Boyd, famous actor and lead singer of an up-and-coming band.
The girls left, giggling, and Billy pulled out his mobile as he walked to his car. Dom frowned and stepped slightly to the left, trying to hear the conversation clearly but remain out of sight.
“Hey, love, it’s me,” Billy said cheerfully. “I’m just about in the car. Is Jack asleep?”
Dom bit his lip to keep from cursing aloud and ducked back behind the large vehicle he’d chosen as a hiding place. Through the tinted windows, he watched Billy set his guitar carefully in the backseat and then lean against the door to finish his conversation with Ali. They said their goodbyes and Dom took a quick breath, then hit speed dial 1 on his own mobile mere seconds after Billy had rung off. Billy’s phone rang in his hand, startling him, and Dom saw him check the caller ID before answering.
“Dommeh!”
“Heya, Bills,” Dom replied, a smile forming on his face. Billy looked happy to hear from him.
“How are you, Dom? It’s been a while, hasn’t it? How’s LA? Have you been spending time with Elijah?”
Dom chuckled. “That’s a lot of questions. I’m fine; LA is fine; Elijah’s fine; everything’s just fine.”
“Just fine?” Billy paused with his hand on the door handle and frowned. “Are you alright, Dom?”
“I’m better now I’m talking to you,” Dom said honestly, forcing a smile that Billy would hear through his voice. “How’re you, though, Bill?”
“I’m great. Just got through with a gig, was about to head home. What’re you up to?”
“Uhm, just hanging out. Wanted to-" hear your voice. Dom swallowed. “-talk to you.”
Billy smiled and opened his mouth to say something, but didn’t. Before he could stop it, the words “What is it?” slid out of Dom’s mouth. He winced and covered his mouth with his fist, remembering that he wasn’t supposed to be able to see Billy.
“Oh, um… Just wondering, what’s your schedule like, Dom? Was thinking you could maybe come for a visit. Maybe see your parents for a few days and then come up here and stay with Ali and me for a while. I’m sure Jack misses you.”
Dom laughed. “Billy, he probably doesn’t even remember me yet.”
“Alright fine, I admit it: I miss you.” Billy laughed as well, obviously not ashamed of admitting it at all. “Listen, Dom, I have to go, but… We’ll figure something out, okay? Say hi to Elwood for me.”
Dom sighed and slumped against the car he was leaning on. “Yeah, sure, Bills. Will do.”
“I’ll see you soon, yeah?”
“Yeah.” Dom forced another smile. “Bye, Billy.”
“I’ll call you later, Dommeh. Bye!” Billy snapped his phone closed and slid into his car.
Dom quickly stepped out from his hiding place and said, breathlessly, “I love you,” but Billy was already gone.
