Saturday I shall spend 24 hours trying to catch a baby. I have never seen a birth in person. We'll see how this goes...I'm kind of excited. I remembered that I love gross things the best and baby catching is hopefully less chit-chatting while I twiddle my thumbs and more doing.

Gross. Though, I wouldn't expect you to need to do much. After all, it kind of happens with or without you. I'm interested to know how it goes!

I've always wondered how necessary doctors or various coaches are to the birthing process. After all, people have been doing it for, you know, ever, presumably with no help or bad advice for nearly all of it. Are doctor-fixable mishaps really common?

Well, since all three births I saw were c-sections, the doctor was fairly necessary. There is an argument for the fact that we do too many c-sections, but it's really safe for baby and mom usually lives and recovers too. Two of the three were repeat c-sections, one a new mom of four in which every baby was breech, and one a new mom of three and I think her first one was breech (and after one c-section you tend to c-section again because any risk of popping your uterus and bleeding to death is too much risk). And then the last one who didn't produce a baby after reaching complete dilation and pushing for three hours. I don't think that baby was ever coming out, her pelvis was too small. Then there were a few patients that were on bed rest and MgSO4 being monitored for preterm labor trying our best to stop it. I'll let you know once I see a mom who doesn't need us. :)

Oh, there was one who was being induced and just hanging out and dilating very slowly. She might be able to get that baby out someday, but I won't be there to see it. We did the induction, but she probably would have gone into labor sooner or later.
