Apparently they were really gathering steam, and winning elections, in the years leading up to WWI. Then people started getting arrested for saying or doing anything that hurt recruitment, and one of the biggest leaders (Eugene V. Debs, whose name I'd actually heard but forgotten) ended up in jail. And then "socialism" started to be a dirty word and I guess it wasn't considered safe to teach the children about it.
