things fall apart, the centre cannot hold;
mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.
So I guess the question is whether that statement has even the barest negative connotation ( Read more... )

this isn't meant to sound depressing or angsty or any such thing.
but meaningful..to whom?
define meaningful. because i've come to believe that lives and people aren't really meaningful to anyone but each other. i mean, think of a really meaningful person. pick someone.
i'm picking ghandi. ok, so ghandi is someone "meaningful". but what does that mean? he's meaningful to other human lives, yes. but do they mean anything? not really.
so he's important to a lot of unimportant lives. even if he's remembered throughout all of human existance, that doesn't mean anything because human existance doesn't influence anything other than human existance. there is no goal.
it's like the fucking sims. no point but buying really expensive things.
which is cool in itself.

And you're right in that.

The problem, I suppose, is my refusal to accept that as enough. I don't like other people enough to live my life for them (and there's the whole epistemological problem). But I'm not sure how one goes about living life for oneself in a way that is "meaningful" enough to justify it.

Life itself from a cold logic standpoint has no meaning--if you're nonspiritual and goal-oriented, all life starts and ends in the same way so it's silly to worry about the middle.

The meaning it has is the meaning we give it. I find life to be inherently meaningful because of the individualness of it, of how different it is from a rock or empty space. Well, it's more than that but I can't really express it into words. I guess I feel like because living is so short and rare, and the difference between death and life so great, it becomes inherently precious and thus the best thing anyone can do is to make the most of their lives and the lives of the ones around them ( ... )
