Until there exist fair wages for fair work in the U.S., I will remain convinced that half of our economy is based on exploitation.
That said, I don't believe it's entirely the government's responsibility to "fix things" nor is it entirely corpo' America's fault. The American consumer, focused on getting the cheapest damn price for overseas made product is a big factor. This is why I like to find American made products that use American sourced materials, even if they cost 4 to 8 times what I could get at Gwalmart.
'Til more people shift their mindset, we're doomed.
The Rust Belt needs to breath anew. Let the fires of industry be rekindled. Let our tribe's resources be exploited instead of paying our rivals for the dubious privilege of using theirs.
Oh but for the days when "Made In America" meant something.
You do realize that you help pay towards your "leeching" with every paycheck, right? Unemployment, COBRA, etc., is provided by the taxes we pay. Calling it leeching is incorrect; it's getting help when needed, provided by Past You.
I had savings and a family to lean on when I needed it most. Plenty of other people do too but choose to go on the dole because it is easier. Not denying some people DO need more help than would otherwise be available but the system is all too often abused.
I only need to take a walk through certain parts of town for proof. Third generation learned helplessness at it's worst.
When does the focus shift to healing the addict instead of feeding their addiction? When do these kids get the help to break free of the cycle?
I hear the talk of plans and committees. I see no appreciable actions being taken.

Still I felt useless and ashamed to not be contributing to society and my own financial well-being.

I won't accept charity unless I'm actively in the process of starving to death.

Liberal. Conservative.
Words. Labels. Posturing.
Meaningless.
Action and reaction is all that matters.
The system needs an overhaul.
