Thoughts on Bristol Palin

I’m a very liberal Democrat. I have opinions about Sarah Palin, most of them negative. But generally, I try to ignore stories about her children, because it’s unfair for them to be stuck in this media circus, and the media’s treatment of them tends to make me uncomfortable ( Read more... )

I don't give a crap if it's supposedly buying into society's idea of beauty, if someone wants plastic surgery that's absolutely their choice.

I have a friend who got breast implants not too long ago. She is a happier person for it, and I'm very happy for her. I can tell the difference in her attitude.

I think there's a limit... I have a hard time believing Michael Jackson was ever happy with his nose (for obvious reasons). If you continue being miserable about your body after multiple plastic surgeries (on the same part of the body), it may be time to reassess things.

Definitely, that's why I said there are legitimate concerns. If you're getting plastic surgery to buy happiness or because your husband told you to, that's not healthy. In fact, I support psychological screening before surgery, because it can be a really big decision.

But I made the mistake of doing a little reading on Bristol, and I had to write this essay because I'm just seething at all the judgment going around. If she had really big nose or something, these same people would be making comments about how she needs a nose job (and then they would rail on her for it afterwards). It's so hypocritical. And I'm taking it a bit too personally. If I'd been a little bit older when I had my surgery, I know I would have had people talking behind my back.

Until today, I had no idea plastic surgery was one of my trigger issues. Or that I would ever feel this compassionately towards a Palin. But I am FIRED UP over this. I put way too much pain and effort into this face to hear people say that it's something to be ashamed of.

Oh man, that's another one. A few weeks ago there was an article on Slate or AOL or something talking about how bullying forced a 7-year-old girl into getting plastic surgery. Turned out she was getting her ears pinned back. I'm not saying that the bullying wasn't tragic,* but but from the tone of the article, you'd have thought no one under eighteen had ever had their ears pinned back before. Ear-pinning is a super-common surgery for kids. Not exactly a big deal.

*I feel very conflicted about this story, because I'm both anti-bullying and "meh" on ear-pinning, and I don't want to come off as some sort of victim-blamer because I dislike the article's tone. Thus why I waited for Bristol Palin for my Angry Essay.
