What about Japan, Vietnam, and South Korea, who also took the virus seriously?Edit

To be fair - Japan, South Korea and Taiwan (although I know you didn't mention Taiwan) are all *much closer* to the then-epicenter of the virus. Things like this virus didn't seem too serious back then because it was literally all the way of the opposite side of the globe and no one knew just how dangerous this was.

China itself didn't take it seriously as far back as mid-December, despite the fact that the very first known asymptomatic person probably could have had it since November.

In fact, if North America even had taken it more seriously for what it was/is, the first time it would have been officially confirmed would have been Jan 15 when an American came back from China and was deemed infectious.

And that's after China already had Wuhan in lockdown (phone surveillance, ordering groceries to be delivered, etc). China had just began their hard lock-down January 23, well after the American was in quarantine ( ... )

China has a shithole corrupt government that no one should ever trust. I still don't trust their numbers. I hope the rest of the world holds them accountable for the lies and coverups that allowed this virus to spread. And the WHO as well while they're at. The WHO completely dropped the ball on this. Taiwan warned the WHO back in January about the virus and said it was transmissible between human and WHO completely ignored them. They still ignore them.

I'll grant "you" the anger of our country not taking this more seriously in January and all throughout February, but I don't think anyone knew just how deadly this spreads, nor how to combat it. The idea of doing extreme measures (think Taiwan and Korea) would have been met without colossal outrage in North America.Taking it seriously doesn't have to mean extreme measures. I'm actually against this current ( ... )

Taking it seriously doesn't have to mean extreme measures.

What does "extreme" measures mean to you? What, in your opinion, could have prevented all this?

I'm actually against this current lockdown. It has a potential to cause a huge economic depression and social unrest that I believe will be more harmful than the virus itself.

Well, that's where we are now. People are stupid and didn't listen, that is very true - but how would you have had countries deal with this?

What *would* have prevented this lockdown, if anything? Doing preventative measures like most of Asia? I'm sure you've read that Wuhan itself actually tracked phones and didn't allow anyone to go out for groceries - gotta have that stuff delivered by staff wearing protective gear, face masks, and gloves.

(I can't see North America ever enabling that sort of thing. Like, ever.)

Which privacy measures are you talking about? Stopping flights from infected area? Doesn't affect my privacy. Screening people at airports? Doesn't affect my privacy.I am talking about all ( ... )

1. Stopping flights from infected areas.
2. Screening people at airports.
3. Quarantining people who test positive for the virus.
4. Warning people that there is a virus that's highly infectious, so please wash your hands often and wear masks when you're out in public.

Would that have prevented the virus? Of course not. But it could helped slow the spread so we wouldn't have to resort to a lockdown that has a potential of causing enormous financial and social problems.
