Oh, this is lovely! You use poetic imagery just amazingly - it's part poetry, part prayer. I'd love just a hint more background - was this right after Guarnere got hit? Babe was pretty tough, but I'm sure that through him for a loop (or two).

I think Julian died before Guarnere - but you're right, losing Julian would have knocked him for a loop, too. Babe said in his autobiography that he and Julian actually met at the Repple-Depple, and had become pretty close friends.

Either way - you use language just beautifully. I hope you can forgive the lateness of my reply! (You're probably going to get a lot of grateful but apologetic replies from me today...)
