New Conspiracy Theory!

But, first, harmony_bites has written me a marvelous ficlet of Ron bashing, wonderful use of dichotomy, and beautiful imagery. So go read that before you continue onto any of my pointless blatherings.

Now that I am certain all have done that... conspiracy theory time!

My dearest mother recently asked me to order in a book from work entitled Smart Women ( Read more... )

At many corporations, raises are built-in yearly, after the manager rates you with a corporate-required mandatory annual review. We get an annual cost-of-living amount of 3 percent, and then if we've gone "beyond the call of duty" (in other words, gave up any kind of personal life to put in more hours), then we get a smidgen of a "merit raise." I've never worked for a company where you just "ask for a raise" and get it/not get it. I wonder if the advice in this book actually applies to real life ( ... )

Rambling is encouraged--I do it all the time.

I worked for a corporation with six month mandatory reviews and automatic raise (although the amount of the raise was negotiable), but the problem lay in the fact that my manager at the time was a complete idiot and consistently 'forgot' to give us reviews.

Notably, though, they were based on self-evaluation, so what you thought you deserved played a huge role in the raise. I just found the book very presumtuous and condescending, in addition to the fact that it was stating the obvious.

and we pretty much decided that she (and other women in power), are either afraid of appearing as whiners, or else are in denial that such outdated opinions (as you quoted above) still exist.

To anyone who believes that they don't, I suggest sticking a tape recorder in a men's changeroom.

My main tactic for dealing with it is just to laugh--nobody likes to be laughed at, so it's infinitely more persuasive than just feeding the fire by arguing, I think ( ... )

I know we're not beyond the Neanderthals, though truly, I often find the women of this ilk far, far worse than any of the men. I'm not so convinced it's men who are keeping us down as ourselves. The most virulent opponent, for instance, of women in the military I've ever encountered is a woman, Mona Charen, a conservative columnist.

Oh, and thanks for the pimping of ficlet. I'm very chuffed you liked it so much. The fourth and last bonus ficlet is now up.

Which means I have no more excuses to avoid the WIP...

I agree-it may not be as extreme as the example that you cited, but the attitude exists in small ways in day to day life. Occasionally, I see women do things that perpetrates a stereotype to an extreme and I want to slap them.

Still, blaming the patriarchcal institution of self-help books is always fun.

Of course I pimped-it's what I do when I like things.

Erm... Yours was going to be up tonight, but in the midst of making myself some guacamole last night (I experienced an intense need, followed by a recipe hunt), I stumbled across a new bunny that I think you'll like better. So, guacamole is the magical writing food, although not necessarily in the way that I was hoping.

It will, however, be up tomorrow.

Tomorrow is fine...

::rubs hands in gleeful anticipation::

With my ficlets done, I get now to just sit back and enjoy my bounty...

So, maybe I should post my guacomole recipe... Ah, the glory that is the avocado...

Now I'm on a deadline... Which is good, because it means that it will be finished.

You should-it's probably far more authentic than mine...

Before last night, I had never held a whole avocado in my palm. Trying to peel it was an enlightening and potentially dangerous exercise.
