Dairy, or lack thereof

So, I'm almost positive I'm lactose intolerant. I'm definitely having issues with something in my diet, and dairy seems the likely candidate ( Read more... )

Lactose-free milk (Lactaid brand, but also Organic Valley makes a Lactose-free milk as do a few other companies).

I don't have problems with butter and, well, I just kinda suffer the consequences after eating cheese.

I actually like Lactaid more than ordinary milk, it's just more expensive. (And I am very poor at the moment.)

The new plan is to play vegan for a week-if I'm more strict with my diet, chances are I'll at least stick to the no dairy bit.

I totally hear you on the Lactaid being more expensive, but then again Lactaid pills before each glass of milk can be even more expensive depending on your drinking habits.

There's also rice milk (Rice Dream and/or other brands) as a possibility. I happen to like the taste of it as an alternative beverage. Prices will depend on your local store and/or access to Amazon+free shipping.

I don't care much for rice or almond milk-and I only like certain soy brands (So Nice is my favourite)-so my milk substitutes that I will actually drink are limited....

Luckily for me, my mother is a pharmacist with an incredibly comprehensive health plan, so I never have to worry about pills. Fortunately.

No, they are the much daintier eight and a half. Good luck cramming your feet in. :P

Giving up cheese. I could do most of the rest, but no cheese. Oh, you poor, poor baby.

Perhaps you'll be lucky and it's just milk? I can't stomach milk itself, but I have no problems with any processed milk products - ice cream, cheese, yoghurt, buttermilk, kefir etc.

Good luck, anyway - I know I'd be very unhappy if I had to cut out all of those from my diet.

Lately it has been a general feeling of bloatedness which makes me feel cranky and disgusting, to the point where I seriously considered going on one of those detox things where you live off of fruit shakes for nine days...

So, hopefully a few days without will cure me. And if it doesn't... all is not lost, for there are pills that help digest lactose.

My sympathies. Cows milk tends to block me up (although cheese from it seems to be fine in small-ish quantities). I don't know if it's available (and not too pricey!) where you live, but goats milk works for me.

I'm finishing off day 2 and the unusually settled stomach suggests that it is the lactose. Sigh.

Good point about the goat's milk (and cheese)! I'll have to give that a try.
