As for The Vampire Diaries, I've heard about it too, but being that I've had a rather TRAUMATISING experience with Twilight, I've banned vampires and werewolves from my book. Forever.
LOL. I really shouldn't laugh at that, because it would be a great injustice to leave the Vampire Diaries out in the cold due to Meyer's work.
That said, I am now treating Twilight with all the aplomb of a train wreck. I just...I can't stop. I sat down last night and read New Moon in one sitting. And speaking of, silburygirl, I can chalk the 1st book up to simple annoyance, but Meyer's 2nd book is in need of some major discussing, which I feel compelled to make a post of later on. Provided, of course, that no one's sick to death of me talking about it yet. ;-)
Moving off of Twilight, great thoughts on Diaries here. And again with Elena's strength - I was flipping through the first book yesterday and happened across the line, "And I swear not to rest until he's mine."
Whoot! Elena is such a great example of 'I came, I saw, I conquered.'
He embodies the question of what happens when an ordinary person, without any sort of power, is dragged into supernatural events. He and Meredith handled the situations in very different ways, and I thought

Stephenie Meyer is by no means representative of vampire books, so I don't think she's a reason to avoid them. For starters, they glitter...
