Holy Bananas, Batman!

In the brief few days since I posted last, a great many things have happened, the most significant of which being that my hair is rather ginger (and I love it), my sister has visited (which was marvellous), and that I went to see The Dark Knight, which was awesome. It actually managed to combine two of my favourite filmly things: decent ( Read more... )

film, books

Sigh... I fall more on the graphic novels side than the comic book side for that reason, but I'm willing to be sold. I just haven't been, yet.

I did enjoy Maggie Gyllenhaal's version of Rachel much more, did you? She's just stronger than K.Holmes, I think.

I loved her version of Rachel, which is why I was so annoyed by the fact that she died. It turned her into a plot device that was all about the Manly Angst.

As for V for Vendetta - have you read Alan Moore's Watchmen? Are you excited for the movie? I think you will find that featuring women characters that don't make you want to bash your head in! =]

Haven't yet, but I've heard good things about it and am looking forward to it.

Mr. 42 and I saw "Batman Begins" on Sunday and were as wowed as you were by the excellent writing and deliberate standing of comic book movie tropes on their ears... except for the love interest thing. On one hand, she never blubbered or did the Kirsten Dunst useless screaming thing, she was brave to the end, and it's almost an anti-superhero trope that he DIDN'T save her and have her all "Ooooeeerr, Batman, you saved me!" *eyelash flutter* But I agree, after "Dr. Horrible" and this, I've had enough of reducing female characters to stops on the hero's journey. Bleah!

And speaking of unusual heroes, I slightly prefer the graphic novel of V to the film because I didn't like the way the film turned Evy and V's relationship into a romantic one. In all other respects (STEPHEN FRY!!!) the film is excellent well done, and I really enjoyed it. We saw some stuff on "Watchmen" at Comic-Con, and I can hardly wait to read the book!

Yay for books!

That is a good point, and the significant lack of screaming was a nice change... Same with the fluttering eyelashes.

And that bit at the party where she calls out the joker was probably my favourite part of the film.

After I read it, I poked around online a bit, and apparently the graphic novel was supposed have that element of romance-they danced together-but I liked that the story focussed on the plot and other characters. However, I love Stephen Fry too much to prefer the graphic novel significantly.

Where are the action movies with women characters who don't make me want to bash my head in on the sticky, popcorn-coated seat in front of me? Can someone please gently guide me to them, before I feel compelled to start writing them myself?

Buffy. Otherwise? tilts head Not that I can think of.

So better start writing, missy.

(And you could always add some "Oh Canada!" moments for spice. No?)

I take it back, actually. There is Terminator II--and there are the Alien movies--Ripley rocks!

Sigh... They show up every once in a while, but not often enough for my liking. This, I suspect, will be a major part of my motivation for writing original fic (and it's one of the many reasons that Tamora Pierce is my hero).

Oooh, I hadn't thought of that!

I have not read the spoilers, for I haven't seen the movie yet. And I feel quite frustrated about it. For one reason or another I never get to see the bloody movie! *pouts*

It's a wonderful movie, aside from those two things that annoyed me.

We saw Wanted last night, and that has Angelina Jolie as a fairly kick-ass female lead. It was what I call 'thoroughly enjoyable rubbish', though my husband missed the entire symbolism of weavers/cloth/fate as they don't tend to cover that sort of stuff in sporting biographies.

I like this 'thoroughly enjoyable rubbish' that you speak of-I think that the people who don't enjoy it only don't like it because they're being pretentious.

I'll look into Wanted-among other things, because Angelina Jolie is awesome.

Well worth a look - James McAvoy is rather yummy in it too.
