You know there are henna mixes that will give you a lighter red.
If you go to Henna for Hair website they have directions on how and what to mix with your henna to get various shades of red from light strawberry blonde to dark auburn. I always buy my henna from them.

Yeah, I looked into it, and I think I'm going to test a 70% cassia to 30% henna mix just as a tester. It won't make my hair lighter, but it won't be as drastic as a full on henna and I can always do a darker henna later.

I have been staring at that website for weeks while contemplating the plunge. I already have their red kit but just ordered some cassia so I can ease into it.

The thing is that henna won't lighten my hair, so I don't think I can achieve the strawberry color without first chemically lightening my hair.

Gosh...I vote henna, for purely selfish reasons. Our coloring is somewhat similar. ;)

Is your concern mostly with the fact that you don't want to re-dye it with chemical dies to lighten it later if you use henna? I'm just trying to make sure I understand your concern about lightening.

I just henna'd my hair again this Sat, but I go for a dark strawberry chocolate so I mix 50/50 henna/indigo.

No, my concern is that there's NO lightening henna once it's in your hair. I could bleach it to lighten it a smidge, but that completely negates the point of doing henna in the first place.

And yet, I'd like hair that is a few shades lighter than my current color.

Oh okay, I getcha. I think you'd look fabulous in either color, really, so I don't think I'm much help lol.

Having recently done henna -- it does lighten SOME over time. Red is just hard to sustain. I hennaed back in early June & you can't really tell where my roots have come in unless you're paying attention. Granted -- I'm a brunette. Your hair will be far more drastic than anything I could manage. However... don't despair if the color is brighter at first. It will mellow some.

Have you seen this?

I have a friend that uses it and she does a blonde that looks very natural.

No, but that's cool. I'll definitely bookmark that for another time. I already bought the henna & cassia, so I feel like I've committed. BUT I could always pre-lighten with that. It'd probably be much less damaging than other dyes.
