My Hugo Votes: Best Novel 2012

Jul 19, 2012 12:34

Instead of immersing myself in the Dutch language like I should, I've spent the last few weeks swimming about in the Hugo Voter Packet. The results of my dive were better than last year: again, one or two discoveries I'll be excited to hear more from, but less outright bad stuff ( Read more... )

I use No Award as "I would be embarrassed if this won", and I don't think I'd be embarrassed if either Grant or Martin won, though I've downvoting them because both are bridge volumes: I'll give a higher vote to a series novel if it's the first (one that introduces us to a world) or the last (it completes the story ( ... )

I wouldn't be embarrassed if Deadline won, I'd be annoyed. I want her to do better! Mind you, Embassytown could've been better too, as you say.

I think I got why Leviathan Wakes was on the ballot, but less so towards the end of it. More bloody zombies...

It's zombies every-bloody-where at the moment.

Next big thing - vampire dom/zombie sub SM erotica. With a were monster slayer who wants to rescue/redeem the zombie and is secretly, ashamedly, attracted to the vamp.

Rid! There's a name I haven't heard in a long time.

I wish I could've gone to your Worldcon. The proposed guests for 2014 sound fine, but both Bujold and Willis would've been fantastic, even, if as you say, their most recent work hasn't been their best. Do you remember you got me into reading Bujold? You and Jennier Barber between you.

Rid's still alive and well and lurking. Possibly even here!

Are the guests set for 2014 already? I suppose publishing schedules probably are, so authors like Willis and Bujold who don't have a book in contention wouldn't go. Though if I were them I would for the English fan sales.

No, I have no memory of forcing you to read Bujold but I was and am a big fan and I tend to forcefully advocate for books and authors I like! I remember ganging up with a couple people to get someone to try To Say Nothing of the Dog when I'd first read it :)
