Labour also came a-canvassing but didn't have enough English to talk to me about this issue.

And that's the bit that left me gobsmacked. You're canvassing in the UK and you can't actually speak the main language of the country?

I had to check with gmh that I didn't actually sound like some sort of Daily Fail fascist/BNP/UKIPer for finding that more a bit ridiculous and outrageous.

I really should include that in my mail to Labour: why did they send two Bengali speakers who had so little English. One Bengali speaker and one fluent English speaker, now that would've made sense.

I was trying to give a rationale for that, but ended up deleting and writing this apology for not writing what I thought, because it all came out as horribly racist drivel. It would indeed have made sense to have at least one canvasser who spoke fluent English.

That was both the reaction and the fear that I had to that sentence as well.

I guess they can't speak the main language of the country but can speak the main language of the community - though what that means if they actually got elected I'm not quite sure. Are council meetings bi-lingual in TH?

(Or were they just a canvasser not actually the person standing for election?)

Still.....
