As usual, coffee is often served with a special little biscuit, tea generally without. Discrimination!

Many decades ago, when I worked for the North Thames Gas Board (as it then was), if we had tea in the aftrnoon we got free biccies in the morning and the afternoon. This was a bribe because the tea was absolutely dire. As I didn't like tea anyway, it wasn't a big deal, so I had the evil tea in the morning and the evil coffee in the afternoon and in any case had the biscuits. I rendered it in "Cosher Bailey" style as:

"In the morning we had coffee
That was thick and dark as toffee
And was floating round with tea leaves
Where you'd never think to see leave"

Your pome makes it sound really horrible! If it'd been me, I would've passed on the hot drinks as I can live without biscuits. :-) But I do love the little speculaas biscuits that come with coffee and think they are good accompaniment for tea too. Though I concede that the little coffee-flavoured biscuits might not go so well...

Believe me, if you were working for NTGB in the late 60s/early 70s you needed something.

Cheese toastie with jam -- that's the "it's just like brie and cranberry" school of thought, isn't it? Not sure where the chilli flakes come in though, yech!

Cheese toastie with jam spells yech to me; the chili flakes might make it tolerable, as in, numbs the taste buds.

The quince jelly I made the other week goes beautifully with mature cheddar on crispbreads.

Marmite and cheese is normal, at least by NZ standards. As long as he's not adding sambal to that combination...

Sambal with cheese. Yum.

(I've only got half a large jar left.)

(And it's the Sambal Oelek in my case, just in case there turns out to be some totally different type of sambal which is actually a sweet fermented fruit yeast or something.)
