We still get mail for the previous owner (moved out 2 years ago) and even for her tenants, the last one of which moved out at least six months before she sold! Most of it is promo mail and organisations who just got your address at some point (not the sort you think about changing). I've printed up stickers that say 'Addressed moved away 2 years ago. Please take this address out of your database'

The occasional personal card (long lost acquaintances?) is harder though. I have one here that doesn't have a return address. And I have a probable forwarding address for the previous owner, but I really am kind of sick of forwarding mail after 2 years!

Fortunately, the wedding invite had a e-mail address showing through the envelope, so I can feel better about that one.

If possible, I leave some large pre-addressed envelopes and stamps behind and ask the next people to forward bunches of mail on. I got two of those going from Leiden to Paris, but in the space of a couple of months, not years!

I lived at my last flat for over six years, and I was still getting mail (including greetings cards and wedding invitations) for previous tenants right up until I moved!

I'm getting plenty at the new place now but I'm endeavouring to RTS it all.

Amazing, isn't it? I can understand how a few personal items would end up at the old address but not for that length of time. It's made me resolve to be very strict about doing my own change of addresses.

There is something to be said for the Swiss (and the USA) - if your name isn't on any of the letterboxes at the indicated address it gets returned to sender marked "not known". It does mean that when you move you need to make sure your name is on the letterbox pretty sharpish - but in fact, when we moved into our place in Zürich the landlord had the little engraved plate with our names on it in situ several days before we moved in.
