Gigs A-Go-Go: Amanda Palmer at Union Chapel

Sep 14, 2009 21:31

Two days after Tori, I went to my first Amanda Palmer gig at the lovely Union Chapel in Islington. It was an easy venue to find. All you had to do was follow the man pedalling an upright down Upper Street. And the fans' hair. I swear I have never seen so much pink hair in a queue for a gig ( Read more... )

I am envious of you seeing Amanda Palmer. I missed her in Edinburgh, alas.

Hey, I was there the same night. Why didn't we know this.... :-)
(and yes, it was awesome. I loved the new song. Depressing yet beautiful)

So strange that I didn't see you. Had you camouflaged yourself with pink hair? I wasn't expecting to see anyone I knew and was busy chatting first with a pair of Rotterdammers and then with a pair of Tegan & Sara fans who admired my t-shirt (I was so underdressed!)

I was in the seventh centre pew back from the stage. Did you get a good spot as well?

Was on the far right, having arrived late - missed most of miss Scattergood. Still got a good view though :-) Also left fairly promptly after, so no real reason we'd have run into each other.

I was afraid I'd managed to walk right past you in the queue.

Polly Scattergood was fine, and a real improvement on Tori's support act. She did better once she had other people around her.

Having discovered Polly Scattergood sometime after you posted this, I am now deeply envious of you having seen her.

(Amanda Palmer, well, maybe I'll get into her one of these days.)

I wasn't completely sold on Polly Scattergood when I saw her at that concert, she still seemed to be finding her way live. Definitely had promise though and I really enjoyed her Puff the Magic Dragon duet with Amanda Palmer.

I wonder how much live experience she's had. And it may be the case that she's one of those performers that you need to know the studio versions of her songs studio to properly get them when she does them live.

(She's currently singing her 2007 single 'Nitrogen Pink' into my brain.)

I came across her by following the Last.fm page for Bat For Lashes one evening, and deciding that her songs were odd, but strangely attractive.

I got the impression that Scattergood could've used more experience playing live. No doubt she'll have improved since I saw her.
