Oh man! You're making me all jealous... I want to go back to NZ too. We didn't spend much time on the north island, because we only had two weeks, and didn't want to be rushing about all the time - but we did go to Rotorua. The best parts of that place were the hot springs (bathhouse) and a restaurant called Herb's, but we also went to hobbiton and the Maori/hot springs park thingy.
You've probably seen more of the South Island than I have. :-) The dangers of being resident in a country... Not rushing about is good - I think there's a limit to what you can take in. I'd love to do the Hobbiton tour, that is definitely a reason for going back. I avoided the Te Puia Maori thing, what did you think of it?
If you do do the hobbiton thing at som point, my advice is go from rotorua - unless it's changed. When we where there (granted, a few years ago now) the main tourbus left from some other town (forget which). So what we got was a local with a minibus who drove me, the bf, and a very nice german girl, out there to join the tour on the site. The perks of this was that 1) we had a personal guide/driver, 2) we got to have a nice tea while waiting for the busload, 3) on the way back he spontaneously decided we just had to see this small town which was full of corrugated steel sculptures...weird, but great
( ... )
We didn't go through Tirau but we were driven through Otorohanga which is full of large-scale Kiwiana.
I'm so used to the guitar being a traditional Maori instrument that I didn't think about it that way, it is kinda funny. :-) The real old stuff is wind instruments with a bit of percussion, as far as I can tell.
