Say Cheese

Sep 06, 2007 20:50

For the last couple of months, I've been having cheese sandwiches for breakfast. Don't ask me why I've started following Dutch custom now of all times, I think I had the vague idea I needed more dairy in my diet. However, strange to say, I've run into more than a few English people who think cheese is bad and unhealthy, it doesn't seem to have a good reputation here. The reason hasn't been explained to me, but I'm guessing it's the fat content?

Wingnut resolved to ask his workmates about his cheese sandwiches. But his survey didn't provide any answers because they got so caught up in the horror of sandwiches! for breakfast?! that the cheese was ignored.

Actually, I'm not being deliberately Dutch with this. A life-long aversion to butter and margarine means that the sandwich form is necessary to stop the cheese from falling out when I, and it must be confessed, my keyboard, eat breakfast. When I have hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles)...um, Dutch people, please skip to the next paragraph now...ahem, when I have hagelslag I put strawberry jam on the bread to stop them from rolling off so no sandwiching is needed.

If English people have indeed been banning cheese from their plates, I hope they'll go back to eating it again. I've been having fun trying out English cheeses since moving here and it would be a shame if they didn't get the appreciative audience they deserve.
