You certainly managed the sadness and regret - did it very well too. Excellent.

This feels like something Ennis might say to Jack in a letter, trying to explain why things are the way they are.

I totally get the sadness and the regret in Ennis's thoughts, and I can see how he really wants to change things between them for the better, yet, he can't seem to get around his doubts and fears.
I would love for this to turn into an AU piece, the ingredients are there, but, I can also see the canon coming out in it as well.

I'm looking forward to your next update. I would like to know how Ennis handles himself when he has to actually talk to Jack. : )

Absolute Ennis. I'm hoping that Jack will be there, and that Ennis will be able to say some of it, and that Jack will still be able to hear it. Just beautiful writing, especially this: That’s the way you always been with me.... givin’ more when you didn’t have to, takin’ the bits and pieces a me I was willin’ to spare all these years....

You might never a knowed it, but you had all a me in some ways ever since that one summer all them years ago, and I hope like hell I ain’t waited too late to take you up on your offer..

I loved the way you set the mood from the first, too. It's a brilliant opener: Goddamn... Thirty-nine years old, heart poundin’ like a seventeen year old, driving hell for leather to meet you like there’s a semi loaded down with demons on my tail.... Piece a shit truck’s whinin’ worse’n a mare throwin’ a strappin’ foal, but I got it floor-boarded all the same and I ain’t lettin’ up till it blows up or I get there. You're in Asheville, hunh? That's where my sister is. And I believe that's a gay-friendly bed and ( ... )
