I have a friend who specializes in the coinage of the Mercians, especially Penda through Offa, and he's probably ecstatic, even though I didn't see any coins in the inventory list.

The web page said, in effect, that the historians are hard at work documenting this and altering their perceptions of Anglo-Saxon England. That statement reminds me of the central premise of Mary Gentle's Lost Carthage series, wherein a lost civilization moves into our own time and alters history and historical documents so that it fits in!

I don't really see why they have to alter all that much. They already knew there was a major power base in Mercia at that time.

Sure, Sutton Hoo was in East Anglia, but it's not necessarily contemporary with this hoard, and there's no need to come up with, say, an idea of two golden kingdoms, one Christian and one pagan, staring at one another across the hills of England-in-Embryo.
