"The MALP sent back these images," Major Lorne said, and pointed to the projection. "As you can see, there's a structure to the west of the village that appears to have some characteristics of Ancient architecture."

Weir looks at Sheppard and raises an eyebrow, and there they go again, Carles thinks, they're off, not one word between them, just a sharp look and an eyebrow raise and Sheppard says, [eyebrow pop, chin rub].

"Unfortunately, the archaeologists also believe that there are components of Wraith architecture--"

[Straightforward questioning look,] replies Weir.

"--so it goes without saying that we'll need to proceed with caution."

Sheppard says, [eyes at one o'clock, slow nod].

"The interesting part," Dr. Bensen says, gesturing at the picture, "is that the only other fusion structure we've found is from the Classic period."

[Tiny smile,] says Weir, and that would be the end of it, except McKay breaks in with [pencil twiddle.]

"This appears to be Early or Middle Ascension," says Bensen, and clicks the PowerPoint forward to more fuzzy pictures of Ancient structures.

[Eye roll,] McKay says, and Sheppard counters, [smirk, head tilt.]

"As you can see," Bensen continues, gesturing with a laser pointer, "the angle of the buttresses--"

[Death glare,] Weir tells them both. [Death. Glare.]

"--corresponds much more closely with those of our own Atlantis rather than with those of the structures on, for example, M8G-332."

[Skepticism,] McKay says to Weir, and looks to Sheppard for backup, but Sheppard's saying, [rapt attention to Dr. Bensen], and McKay tells him, [open-mouthed indignation] and Weir says, [firm resolve] and the conversation is over.

Carles tries to focus on what Bensen's saying, but really all she can think about is the difference between the Atlanteans who stepped through the gate together and those like herself who came after: the fierce unspoken intimacy, the eerie connection. They lived in each other's pockets and by each other's wits that first year, so much more so than they do now, and Carles realizes that it made them closer than she can ever imagine.

"Thank you," Weir says to Dr. Bensen, breaking the expectant silence. "Colonel Sheppard, Dr. McKay, if you'd care to prepare a mission prospectus?"

Sheppard nods, and says to McKay, [wide-eyed innocence] and McKay replies, [chin lift, slight falter].

"We'll discuss it tomorrow, 0900," Weir says, [eye-flick Sheppard-McKay-Sheppard], and Sheppard says to McKay, [triumphant half-grin] and there's a scraping of chairs as they all get up.

Carles turns to Teyla as they leave. Sheppard and McKay are still sitting at the table; Dr. Weir is shaking her head at both of them.

"I'll never know what that was all about," Carles says.

Teyla just looks at her, and arches an eyebrow.
