Getting rid of a holiday?

I saw this piece, and was curious as to what everyone else thought:

To celebrate Christmas, take away the holiday

I agree. Christmas and other holidays should be more about family or remembrance than buying crap.

A few members of my family aren't doing so well financially this year, so we decided to do a White Elephant exchange with a $10 limit. Why do even that?

A time to give, sure - but do we need to receive? I like the idea of making donations or buying something a poor family really needs (like shoes, not crap) instead of getting each other ties and calendars.

err.. I mean christmas.

I've never been a fan of christmas. NEVER. Even as a kid. Yeah, I liked the presents... but Christmas itself always seemed dumb.

I HAVE been a fan of New Years. That means something to me. I'm all for the celebration of a year passing/starting. I just wish that I could get others out of the christmas spirit and back to reality where spirits don't really exist.

A lot of holidays have lost their shine for me:

* Thanksgiving & Christmas: extended family issues
* Halloween: relationship issues
* Valentine's Day: See above

That pretty much leaves New Year's as the last big meaningful holiday for me. :-/

Halloween and New Years are always my thing.

New Years is so very important to me.. because it gives me time to reflect on the good and bad of the past year... to be glad it's over, so that the next year can have a fresh shot at being better.

In the broad spectrum of my life, this has been the most important year for me. The sheer amount of events and accomplishments in the short amount of time will be hard to top. Of course, in spite of it all, it's also been a very difficult year, emotionally speaking.

My New Year's resolutions are already ready already.
