Things I've eaten since shelter-in-place that had sell-by dates from 2019 that weren't even canned:

- Justin's [tm] brand Classic Cashew Butter (autumn of 2019 iirc, but it was unopened)

- jar of coconut oil that I've been cooking with since lockdown began (June 2019, opened)

- a really good-ass bagel I found in the freezer (March 2019!)

Sell-by dates ( Read more... )

love in the time of corona, food, interesting new lj features

The "new post from this comment" feature is interesting. It does just instantly make and publish the post, with an auto-generated subject line and your default icon and no tags, so there are disadvantages to that. But since LJ isn't exactly the fastest-moving social media cycle, it's easy to make edits to the new post before anyone else would read it anyway.

Last month we made lasagna with noodles two years out of date, and I’m here to say I lived! It was an all-positive experience:)

There seems to be a big difference between "best by" and "sell by"...

I used to adhere to “sell by” or “best before” dates strictly, and would throw things out without even checking if they were still good. Recently, I’ve been much more likely to keep and use things. Today my whole family ate feta cheese that had a best-by date of March 11th. It was totally fine.

I found this post from the NYT useful and informative: The Food Expiration Dates You Should Actually Follow | The first thing you should know? The dates, as we know them, have nothing to do with safety. J. Kenji López-Alt explains.

I live in earthquake country so I always have a stockpile of food and water (and dust masks, gigantic trash bags, and flashlights--and so much more. I keep thinking I should order a tent because if we had to evacuate now, where could we go?) I had to toss some weevil-infested pasta last week which just about killed me since it's so hard to find now. Anything new that comes into the house will get put into the freezer for a few days to kill the baby weevils.
