[psych/anthro/soc, ethics] Nussbaum on Disgust

May 29, 2009 00:29

Huh. This was very interesting. Via makinglight, an interview with Martha C. Nussbaum, who argues against the "wisdom of disgust" position of cultcons, from interesting psychological grounds. But not only that, she really comes across in the interview as a very lovely person, smart, generous, engaged, and warm.

anthro, ethics, soc, psych

Her basic argument is both excellent and mostly well-stated, but it's also seasoned with sufficient amounts of libertarian doctrine and catch-phrases to make it a difficult read for someone like myself who considers libertarianism to be both silly and vile.

What, did you want a trigger tag? "WARNING: Libertarianism!" Or a cookie for getting through it?

Having not previously seen the word 'cultcon', I was trying to figure out what sort of convention you were referring to.

I'm still not sure what the term itself stands for. A portmanteau of "cultural convention", perhaps? Google finds only a convention by that name, cult/con where "con" refers to "confidence trick", and variations of Cult, *, where "*" is another word beginning with con.

Interesting argument; thanks for drawing it to my attention. One of the questions it unexpectedly helps answer for me is a wondering whether I am culturally an individualist or a communitarian; her statements make it clear that there are some aspects of communitarianism I quite disagree with.
