[pshrinkery, tech, school, atheism, feminism, me] Odds and ends (long)

1) I had my appointment with my pshrink last night. I had at the previous appointment printed out the How to Make Friends (for INTPs) and Friendly Christmas Advice posts for her to read. I'd included the full comments, too. Quite aside from what she and I talked about, wrt me, she was very fascinated and impressed by the discourse in the ( Read more... )

Meant to comment to this earlier. leora sums up my POV: who the hell is anyone to tell anyone else how they should be, absent compelling evidence? (Say, scientific investigation into biology.)

Remembered to come back here just now after seeing (at Plep) a link to this gem of a collection of "classic feminist writings that helped define Second Wave feminism."

Definitely interested in hearing the Adventures of the Pshrink and the Net, parts deux and counting :-)

I'd never looked up the definition of radical feminism; I'd never even come across the phrase "cultural feminism" before. I knew my opinion on gender roles -- if there's no biological reason for there to be a difference, why should there be one? (For example: men still can't have babies, as there's a lot of biology in the way. And for jobs that require significant amounts of strength, such as firefighters, men are going to be biologically more likely to have that raw strength than women.) I also grew up on -- and agree with -- Free to Be. I hadn't realized that this made me a radical feminist. Thanks for the information!

kr1mz0n_ghoti's mom is definitely a cultural feminist. As I grew up with a mix of Patriarchy and Ideally We Should Get To Be Whoever We Want it makes me cross my eyes sometimes when I run into the cultural feminist stuff that I can't instinctively grok with either Patriarchal or Ideally We Should Get To Be Whoever We Want expectation filters.

Then it gets really wacky when kr1mz0n_ghoti and I 'run aground' on days we're unconsciously each expecting the other to take the reigns of Pa/Matriarchy. Not because either of us thinks we want it that way but it's what we are each primed to expect.

The movement originated in Germany, and they did everything they can to make their worship as much like that of their Protestant neighbors as they could

Much good assimilation did the German Jews, eh?

I briefly attended a Reform temple (Temple Isaiah in that festering hole of yuppie smugness called Lexington) and was rather put off by its cultural blandness, its painfully earnest attempts at gender-equalizing the prayer book, and how eager the rabbis seemed to be to prove to their goyishe neighbors what Good Jews they were. Their bitch of a female cantor with her very Xtian-choir style of singing openly tsk'ed at me without even engaging me in conversation for dressing casually for Friday night services, because of course temple wasn't about getting in touch with ghod but about showing how Respectable we are! Although I eventually decided that religion isn't for me, I felt much more welcome in a Conservative shul in Somerville devoid of Gentile pretensions, where some people actually wore jeans.

It was radical feminists who wanted ( ... )
