There's this argument in the left, which I find very frustrating, about whether the motives of the Trump voters are better explained by racism or economics.

It's both.

What is being described as "racism", which I think is something bigger and deeper than racism, let us imagine as a kind of infection in the body politic

So do you think Mode 1 people can convert Mode 2 people to Mode 1 by arguing principles with them? Or by ensuring their sense of material (or social?) wellbeing
