I went to a talk this year by Geena Davis, who has an institute for addressing gender equality. She makes the point that in all the years of trying, we haven't gotten past about 17%-20% inclusion in all sorts of arenas, including the one you mention. Interestingly, in most if not all crowd scenes shown in movies, etc., women also make up only about 17%-20% of the crowds. Especially when you factor in animations and cartoons, this is pretty ludicrous. Her premise is that this is one of the reasons why we haven't seen more gains - people get acclimated to thinking that 17%-20% is "the norm" and unconsciously bias there.
