I'm pretty sure wearing a yellow ribbon to signify you were waiting for your man to return dates back to the 19th century among army wives. (Actually, Puritans brought it over during the English Civil War, per Wikipedia. Who knew?)
I will say this for the U.S., we didn't limit the vote for women the way the British did originally. Though we were well behind New Zealand who gave women voting rights in 1893.
