But it was his tone of voice! You could hear the pain under it. And then he turns and caresses her and just gazes at her and makes no move to leave her. I don't think Elizabeth's ploy was necessary. I don't think he would have left her. He certainly didn't try, even when he'd worked himself free, even though we know Jack can swim like a fish. He says that line to convince what's left of his crew to save themselves. And I think it tears him up to do it. After all, he came back to her. She is still his heart's desire. Even Davy Jones keeps calling her Jack's beloved. And at the end Tia Dalma calls her Jack's precious Pearl. And that minute when Jack grabs her helm away from his helmsman. *thud*
Of course, I'm the writer who had Jack say, "If she can’t pull her masts up, I’ll let her go." So perhaps I am not to be trusted.

:-) You know what, that was the conclusion I came to when I saw it again yesterday. "She's only a ship to you, you can live without her even if I can't..." That works! Fannish interpretation saves the day again.
And at the end Tia Dalma calls her Jack's precious Pearl.
That was probably my favourite line. Loved Tia all round.

I hope you don't mind me butting in...I've just been scouring the internet for DMC discussion, because I found a number of things about it decidedly unsatisfactory (unlike CotBP, which satisfied so thoroughly I went fandom-free).
Hi, not alarmed at all, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. :-) Thanks for that first link. The second - [Norrington]Oh, dear.[/Norrington] And yet, they didn't make that very clear, did they? In fact they didn't make that clear at all. It never even crossed my mind that the compass wasn't showing Jack the way to the chest because of Elizabeth... Here's hoping it doesn't become canon. That explanation doesn't even make much sense!

I just want to say, don't be distressed!
What Terry has to say about the "It's only a ship" line
on the other hand, something that has nothing to do with your worries but concerned me greatly: Ted on what the hell the compass means.
