Disclaimer: If I owned them, Kibum and Alexander would stay. I don't mind the new guys - U-kiss can be 9 members - but they would. not. leave. I'd cage them if I had to.
Summary: How Kevin reacts to Kibum and Alexander's leaving.
U-kiss is in the dorms when Kibum and Alexander tell them that they’re leaving.
Kevin’s sitting on the couch, frozen for a part of a minute. This is the second - it’s the second, freaking, time. And this time, he’s not only leaving him, his best friend, behind with his members, but he’s leaving the 6 of them - no, Kevin; its 5 now - without a leader.
So he does what comes naturally. He gets up and slaps Kibum across the face and goes to his parents’ home.
Alexander tries to call him day in and day out. He ends up throwing his battery somewhere in his room. He tells his family that he’s sorry, but could they use their handphones for a little while? He unplugs the house phone from the wall and goes back to sulking in his room. An Arirang PD knocks on the door and he says with a forced smile. “Could you please give me leave for a little while?” And then he closes the door to the outside world.
He knows he should feel lucky. At least the two had told them to their faces, instead of through the news. At least Kibum and Alexander could still stand by them without a devastating court trial causing problems. At least they could all see each other when they had free time. All these put together still don’t make him like it.
Eli rings his bell. Dongho’s sick back at the dorms. Though Kevin may not want to be around anything even remotely U-kiss, Dongho is their his baby. So he lets Eli drive him back and holds Dongho’s head in his lap while the maknae sleeps.
Alexander tries entering with food, but Kevin gives hard glare that says more than enough of ‘Get the hell out.’ Kiseop brings it in later. Kibum watches from a safe distance. He knows how Kevin is taking this - he’s dealt with it before. He also knows that for the longest time, neither he or Alexander should really exist in the dorms.
Kevin has eventually fallen asleep with Dongho. Kibum gives a nod to Alexander, who talks only a bit louder with Kiseop and Eli. He walks towards Dongho’s room and closes the door behind him. He treads towards the bed and sits on it besides the maknae’s feet. Just for a minute, he stares at his boys, his youngests. He grabs at Kevin’s foot and shakes him awake.
“Mmm…Kibum?” Kevin notices how innocent and vulnerable his voice sounds. It disgusts him. He glares. “Oh. Kibum. What are you doing here?”
“Are we really going through this again?” Kibum isn’t scared by the murder in Kevin’s eyes. He’s seen it before.
Kevin knows this too and looks away to Dongho’s hair. He strokes it and speaks. “You tell me - are you leaving again?”
“Kevin, would you give me a chance to explain?” Kibum wants to brush away Dongho’s bangs, too. But he keeps his hands to himself.
“You promised, Kibum. U-kiss forever. Excuse me if I’m a little mad.”
“I haven’t broken that promise, Binie. Just because I won’t be on stage with you guys doesn’t mean U-kiss is gone.”
“U-kiss has always had you for a leader. Adding Kiseop is one thing. Xander leaving is another. But you are something completely different. This is the second time, Kibum - the second time. And now we have to find a new leader? What the hell are you thinking?” Kevin’s voice is strained. He doesn’t want to wake Dongho.
“I just…Kevin, I’ve had my run. At least, that’s what the producers think. They want to give somebody else a try and they want to make it good. Why not a group that’s already made a name for itself? I don’t want to leave either, but something inside of me agrees at least a little. And besides, it’s not like we’ll never see each other ever again.”
Kevin knows this, so he’s quiet. Absent-mindingly, he’s stroking Dongho’s hair. Kibum is watching him and notices how Kevin’s bottom lip is disappearing into his mouth. “Kevin…talk to me.”
Kevin sniffles. “I just don’t want you to go.” His voice is wavering.
Kibum smiles. He dares to put his hand on Kevin’s leg and rub up and down. Kevin still doesn’t look up at him and hiccups. He pulls Dongho up closer and lays his forehead against his hair. The maknae moans and turns to find a better position, falling back to his REM sleep. Kibum notices Kevin begins to cry. He reaches his hand up and ruffles the newly-browned locks, just as he did in XING. “You’re going to do terrific, Binnie. I know you guys will. And when it’s all said and done, whoever they bring in, I know you’ll love them. Even more than you love the 7 of us. And me and Alexander-hyung will always be cheering you on and you’ll know, even when we’re not there.” Kevin makes some sort of movement that Kibum thinks is a nod. He smiles that big smile that goes all the way up to his eyes. He doesn’t speak anymore, but gets off the bed and kisses Kevin’s hair. He closes the door and goes to his room, telling Alexander that Kevin and Dongho are sleeping right now, so he shouldn’t talk so loud. He’s getting in as much leader-ing as he can now.
The next day, the kitchen is tense as Dongho eats his cereal before class. Alexander continues to sneak glances at him over his own breakfast. He wants to check his temperature, feel his skin, look down his throat - his regular Umma instincts. But he’s scared of a fight.
Kevin trudges in and looks somewhere between down and at Alexander. His voice is scratchy as he speaks. “Alexander-hyung.”
Alexander puts down his fork, sitting at full attention. “Yeah?”
Kevin walks some more, but there is still the personal bubble between the two. “I’m sorry for how I acted.”
Alexander stands from his seat, hands in his back pockets. On-looking members know this as his nervous pose. “No. I can understand it. Really.”
They are silent once again. Alexander really believes that that is all Kevin has to say and the angel will just go back home and sleep or sulk or whatever he’s been doing. But Kevin surprises him when he hugs him around his middle, head against his chest. Alexander goes on instinct and wraps his arms around his shoulders.
He hears a sniffle. “Don’t forget about us, Okay? Not even when you meet a nice girl. U-kiss forever, right?”
Alexander wants to laugh and gives a breathy one. He lays his cheek against Kevin’s head. “I won’t - I promise. You guys will always be my Number Ones.”
Dongho smiles and Alexander looks at him. Dongho immediately looks away and scrubs at his face. “Maknae…what’s wrong?”
“I…I want…I want a hug, too. But I have to go to school.” Alexander smiles. Kevin breaks away and Alexander lays a hand on Dongho’s head - just like he’s been wanting to. “I’ll drive you to school, alright? Then I can give you a hug.” Dongho smiles at his hyung and greedily finishes his cereal.
Kevin watches the scene with bittersweet ambivalence. The ‘bitter’ side of the scale tips and he finds himself retreating back to Dongho’s room. Laying across the sheets, random white noise thoughts fill his head. In a damp state, he finds himself floating between awake and unconscious.
A body spoons against his and he knows it’s Kibum. “I still want to be angry at you.” He admits truthfully.
“For this or for XING?” Kibum asks.
“Both, I’m guessing.”
Kibum squeezes him and Kevin closes his eyes. “Than be angry - I can take it. But only be angry with me.” He untangles an arm and pets Kevin’s hair.
Kevin sighs and lets himself succumb to a less fitful sleep than he had last night. U-kiss may be gone - just like XING was gone - but that doesn’t mean he has to leave Kibum and Alexander behind. He sort of wishes he knew that back when he was 17. He still doesn’t like it. But he’ll tolerate it.
