Summary: Prince Ryeowook is fascinated by the human world - so much, that he falls in love with a human prince.
Above the water, those colorful lights appeared and disappeared so fast, Ryeowook thought they were moving. They changed colors too from a warm pink to a teasing green. It was all an open invitation to the young merman.
“Okay, we've seen the flashing lights. Can we please - ” Ryeowook was gone again, jumping through the water closer to the lights.
This was the closest Ryeowook had ever come to a real, not sunken ship. It moved slowly, like a Great Whale, yet it covered the sea in such large heaps. High, high up, a great orange sun shined into the night sky. How did the humans harness the power of the sun that they could use it at their will?
He needed to get a better look.
When the ship came closer, he grabbed onto a ledge and pulled himself up. He'd heaved himself onto the land time and time before, so pulling himself up by his arms with his tail dragging him back to the sea wasn't as much of a trail as it may be for others of his kind.
The ledges tampered off to a whole edge, wide enough that Ryeowook could sit on it as he stared inside.
Why...there were so many humans. They were singing, dancing, laughing and shouting. Ryeowook had never seen one so close before.
“Enjoying the view, Wookie?” Ryeowook had to hold onto the ship to not fall as they surprised him. Shindong smiled at him, perched on rope. “What are you doing, all the way up here?”
“I'm...I'm just...looking.” Ryeowook turned back to the humans, gazing upon them with amazement and wonder.
No other caught his eye for so long than the Man of Honor - Yesung.
He learned his name when a skinny human came out, patting Yesung on a back with a smile and repeating his name over and over. They spoke so simply, it was as if they were speaking Oceanic. In the back of his mind, Ryeowook wondered if he could understand them, why didn't they understand the fish? But he didn't spend much time on it when Yesung actually began to speak.
“Relax, hyung - there's still plenty of time left for all that. I'm still in my prime!” Yesung hopped up on the ledge (right above the edge Ryeowook sat on) and smiled out on the sea.
“Yesung-goon, it isn't just me. Your parents, your friends - the entire kingdom wants to see you settled down before too long.” The skinny human answered, slowly approaching Yesung.
Yesung laughed. He shook his head to move his elegantly black hair out of his reflective brown eyes. “I will, hyung...I just haven't found the right person yet.”
Ryeowook's head ducked down into his chest, blushing red. Shindong wouldn't know - looking at him with a wry smile - but Ryeowook had tricked his ears and heard merman. He leaned against the ship, just enjoying time between him and Yesung-goon.
“Prince!” The exclamation joined with a loud explosion from the sky, much different from the flashing lights. It scared Ryeowook so much he didn't have time to counterbalance. He fell off, hitting the water with a sting. He swam back up and watched in shock.
The ship's sunlight moved up to its ropes and tethers. Actually, it looked a lot like the magic his father used to light the castle. But while his father's power was warm and joyful, as he watched the ship slowly break apart, he felt the light...terrifying and harmful, hot like a volcanic spite. The word screamed out in his head. Fire...
“Abandon ship! Abandon ship!” Voices overlapped, all shouting the same thing. Ryeowook had heard stories - this was the phrase the humans said when they didn't want to die with the ship. They'd jump into the water (they did) and fight against the current for all they were worth. (They fought). Usually, they lost the battle very quickly.
No - Yesung-goon couldn't die. Ryeowook wouldn't let him.
He dove back into the water and raced back to the ship. Surfacing, the light appeared and disappeared and water created blankets in the air - all making it difficult to see. Ryeowook looked back and forth and left and right. Where was he?! He couldn't be...already, could he?
“Yesung!” The skinny man's voice yelled up at the ship. Yesung wobbled up at bow, flipping over and falling like an anchor. The water didn't part like it would for Ryeowook, smashing into Yesung and causing a loud smack. Ryeowook winced. He dove back under and searched for Yesung. He could only hope he wasn't too late.
The world calmed after many hours and the true sun rose up to blue the sky. Exhausted, Ryeowook was successful in pulling Yesung to the shore, far away from the water.
However, Yesung was not as energetic as he had been on his ship. His eyes were closed and his mouth hung open with no golden voice coming out.
“What a storm, huh? Never seen something that crazy.” Shindong came circling down. His smile dropped and he stood across on the other side of the body. “Oh...”
Ryeowook gulped over the stone in his throat. “Is he...I mean, is he..will he?”
“Let me check.” Shindong scuttled around to Yesung's legs. He raised the end of it and pressed his feathers against the stiff foot. His face dropped even more and Ryeowook felt his skin grow cold. “Wookie...I, I can't make out a heartbeat.”
Ryeowook bit his lip, choosing to turn away back to Yesung's face. “No, wait - look! He's breathing.” A gentle hand stroked back his raven hair. Such a touch pulled open those beautiful brown eyes. Ryeowook smiled down upon him. “Thank goodness.”
Yesung's eyes widened and narrowed, desperately trying to focus upon his rescuer. “Who...who are you?”
As Ryeowook's lips parted, another voice called his name. Ryeowook looked up - that skinny little man was running to the shoreline and running fast. As Yesung's eyes closed, Ryeowook escaped to the sea; there one minute, gone the next.
He hid beneath a protruding rock, watching the skinny man and maidens flit about Yesung like algae to a rock. He worried his lip over and over until the humans hobbled the prince off to his castle.
From the water washed up a familiar red and yellow. “That...was the absolute worse experience of my life. Ryeowook, I hope you're happy what I put up with for you. Ryeowook? Are you even listening...to...me?” Kyuhyun followed Ryeowook's line of sight. He felt his mouth hang open and his claws go slack. “Oh no! Ryeowook, this is...you can't...Ryeowook, you're a merman - he's a human!” He fell back into the water. “Oh, when the King finds out about this, he'll fry up himself a crab. Oh, but he won't tell him.” He squished Eunhyuk's face in his claws. “You won't tell him - I won't tell him. And I'll stay alive.”
Ryeowook set his jaw tight. He rose along the rock, sitting tall. “No.” He said firmly. “I will be with Yesung.”
“What?” Kyuhyun spat out, turning to look at the prince.
“Wookie, how are you gonna do that?” Eunhyuk asked from the water.
Ryeowook breathed in deep. “I'll become human.” He turned to his friends. “And I know just who to go to to make it happen.”
