Summary: To save his father, farmboy Jungsu sacrifices himself to be the prisoner of the great beast, Youngwoon.
It was early in the morning when Leeteuk left the house, while his parents and brothers slept. The sun was just rising and lit the path down to the village.
It seemed like when they felt the sun's warmth, the villagers leapt out of bed, ready to work. Just like they did everyday - it never ceased to amaze Jungsu.
“Good morning, Jungsu-ah!” The baker yelled out.
Jungsu smiled and approached the man. “Annyeonghaseyo, sir. How are you today?”
“The bread is good and the sun is shining - the day is good. Would you like a loaf?”
“Make it three, please.” Jungsu took the gold out of his pocket.
“Three, what for?”
“My father is leaving for the country fair with our bull. He won't be back for a while, so I am shopping more than I have.” He paid and put the bread in his basket.
“You are a good son, Jungsu. A good, handsome sir.”
“Thank you, sir.” Jungsu smiled back and moved down the market. He was the eldest son - it was his duty to take care of their family when his father could not. If all went well, his father would receive quite the reward for the family bull. Perhaps they could send his brothers to school and his father could retire.
His parents were growing old. Jungsu had offered to take over the farm time and time again, but his parents would never allow it. “We're not invalids, Jungsu. Let us work until we're dead.” Jungsu would just roll his eyes and turn back to his meal.
When he returned to his home, everyone was up and about, seeing his father off.
“Hyung! Appa said he's going to bring me home a brand new necklace!” His younger brother Hyukjae cheered as soon as he walked in the door.
“And he's bringing me a brand new suit of silk!” The other younger brother Donghae smiled.
His father held up a hand to silence them and approached Jungsu. “Adeul, what would you like me to bring back for you?”
Jungsu smiled. “Just you, Appa. Please come back safely.” He turned to put the groceries away.
“Jungsu, you get up early to feed the chickens, you go to the village, you've taken care of this family before you even had to.” His mother insisted. “Let your father reward you.”
Jungsu smiled brightly. “If you have to, bring me back a white rose if you find me one on the side of the road. If you don't, just say your tried and I'll be fine.” He placed his hands on his father's shoulders. “Now go - be safe.”
They stood outside the family home, waving off as their father mounted the horse and pulled the cart holding the bull into the distance of the woods.
