Poem in Goblin Fruit!

Jan 12, 2009 19:27

The winter '09 issue of Goblin Fruit is up! And I have a poem in it, how awesome is that? Even better, so does grayrose, so I get to be TOC buddies with her here and in the next issue of GUD magazine!

I'm also delighted and amazed because blue_vervain and asakiyume have both said lovely things about my poem. In fact it has taken me a while to post this because for a bit ( Read more... )

OOF. Only just done with that. I'm a technical problem magnet.

I guess I get to read everyone else's tomorrow instead of today.

It's an amazing poem. I was so caught up with it from the first line that I didn't notice it rhymed until halfway through the second stanza.

*blush* Thank you!

I think I didn't know it rhymed till the end of stanza 1, myself. Got to the last word and went "Oh! Uhoh."

Don't know if this is interesting, but... writing it was an odd experience for me. The first line comes from one of elisem's sets of earrings, which had these lovely polished-stone bears. I was oohing over her jewellery stall at Wiscon when I saw it, and lines came into my head. Her art has so many wonderful titles, and I love what (for example) papersky has done with them, but none of them sang to me before this one.

I ran away to write a few lines down, but got sucked back into the wonder that is Wiscon till that night.

So I didn't actually work on it as a poem, or think about it in any structural sense, till lines had been wandering through my mind for several hours and finding their own rhythm. And I'm still not sure how much of it is a reflection of my feelings at being at Wiscon, and how much is the more general shamanic awakening that it seems to be.

Poems can have such an odd genesis. Selkie's Children came out of a combination of wandering tide pools with seajules and trying to write a poem for THEMA's "The Box Under the Bed" issue.

Plus I've always liked Selkies.

I ended up writing three poems on that THEMA theme, but they took another one, "Sorting," which is fine since I kind of always thought "Selkie's Children" was a Goblin Fruit sort of poem.

So, the Muse can be whimsical and inspiration can come from odd places.

And back to your poem, I think it's amusing that even you didn't realize it rhymed! I love form poetry best when it flows so naturally that the form isn't immediately obvious.

Oh you just got me to read your poem prematurely. And here I have been promising myself hot chocolate and a read through of all the poems before I sleep.

But it's all good because your poem gave me the best kind of shivers and I'll get to read it again later :)

I haven't quite dared to write a selkie story yet, myself. But I always love finding them.

I always love bears and I really enjoyed the different characters you've created here. The rhyme really works, I think, almost like a magical lullaby. You've also taught me a new word...now how can I use 'limns' in a sentence so people will think I'm smart? ;)

Thank you!

I haven't actually gotten to read the other poems yet myself. I was trying to make an mp3. This involved multiple crashes and eventually using elsmi's computer for the recording and mine for the text (because I know the poem but not well enough to declaim it without getting my bears mixed up) by which point my voice was going and most times I tried recording it I ended up croaking....

Good times :)

Though I think this is hilariously fun --

It's the first stanza slowed down to 30% speed. I sound like Darth Vader playing a rock troll. With the right link this time:

eep, scary voice!

I couldn't face the joint terrors of technology and hearing my own voice, I like hearing other people's performances though.

That makes me so happy I have no words. Did I ever tell you that your postcolonial literature of the elves sonnet was my first introduction to elise-jewellery-inspired writing?
