Someone I know is hooked on-- he's substance abusing. He claims he needs to step down gradually, like a nicotine patch or something. I don't think I want to let him do that.

But it's not like the city got a methadone clinic in it or something, if he goes cold turkey.

I stopped cold turkey, but I know that doesn't work for anyone. In fact, I know some people who have been in and out of rehab three or four times and still haven't overcome it.

I don't know if it's the same for your friend, but the best thing I did was distance myself from some of the people around me. Or one person, in specific, who was possibly the worst influence anyone could ever have. There was a lot less temptation with her out of my life.
