Summary: Morgana discovers the true damage she’s done
Once they had smiled warmly at each other, often behind Arthur’s back. Now the stares between Merlin and Morgana collide like sword on shield.
They maintain their distance as they circle like cats. Without warning, Morgana hurls a bundle of memories at Merlin. Her opponent sweeps it aside without a gesture and retaliates with memories of his own. A number embed themselves in her thoughts.
Ah.
Recognition does not weaken her defences but means she must redirect her attack.
“This is pointless, Morgana. Neither of us can win today, but both of us will lose if we continue.”
His voice issues the same confident challenge from the night she held him bound in that isolated hovel. Gone are the soft tones and dimpled smiles that lifted her before he tried to kill her.
“To think I loved you once,” she said with disdainful sneer.
Another barrage of memories pierces her defences.
“No,” Morgana gasps. Her eyes widen, she shakes her head, and steps backward. “Lies.”
“No lies, Morgana, only truth.” There is no warmth or sympathy in this heart that was once most generous of them all. “And to think, I loved you once.”
And it is all her fault.
