“America, why don’t you say grace.” It was the annual Christmas dinner that America, Canada, France, and England got together as a “family”. It was an interesting affair each year as fights broke out, something inevitably got broken, and England predictably got drunk and began ranting about his relationships with them.

England knew it was a bad idea as soon as the sentence had left France’s group. America looked surprised and then just as quickly got a mischievous look in his eye. Canada inwardly groaned at the look on his brother’s face.

“Grace?”

“The blessing, you git.” The mischievous look remained as he bowed his head and laced his fingers together in prayer. A small laugh leaked out as he began.

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America...” Three sets of eyes stared, two confused, one amused. “... and to the republic of which it stands, one nation, under god, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.”

“Amen.” added Canada, understanding immediately where his brother was going with this. America laughed pleased with his joke. Canada laughed along with him. He had seen the film each year at America’s house since it was one of this very favorites. Canada had to admit that the film was pretty funny even if it was filled with inside American jokes. At the incredulous glares from the two older nations they figured they better explain.

“It’s from Christmas Vacation.” said Canada.

“Only the best Christmas movie ever made! In fact, I brought it so we could all watch it.” The confused glares had changed to the standard glare from England and an amused look from France. America put on his pleading face, “Can we please watch it after dinner?”

“Please?” added Canada. They looked at their father figures conjuring up the best pleading faces they could.

“Fine, we’ll watch it, but can you please say the proper Christmas blessing?”

“You got it, England!” And with that Christmas began for his haphazard family.
