Spell

America breathed deeply, as the wind blew through the open car window. He always felt that these moments a spell was cast over him. It was if the sands of the hourglass slowed and the road in front of him stretched on into infinite space, an endless eternity. It was just him and the open road. A cross-country trip made him excited.

“America, are we ever going to take a break or are you planning on remaining in this car until we actually arrive?” England grumbled. America just grinned at him.

It was him, the open road, and England.

Dust

If America had to choose one thing that he had always loved about traveling across his lands, it was the dust. The grit told him he was getting somewhere, that the lands had changed from the fertile ones to the east into the arid lands of the west. He loved the dust of his lands and the fact that his boyfriend was now covered in that very dirt, even if England wasn’t.

He couldn’t help it, as soon as they were out of the car he had to kiss him, tasting the dust of the roadtrip against England’s foreign taste.

Living

In this moment England was seriously considering removing America from the face of the earth. Not the actual country, but its personification, was going to be leaving the world of the living if he forced England to sit another hour in this car listening to what America had called “road tunes”. He planned to execute his master plan the next time they made a stop.

America would never expect it. Excellent, the next stop was deserted.

However, his plan failed when America used the opportunity to pull him into his arms and kiss him.

Bollocks. He’d get him next time.

Inspired

England had spent the next five hours of the car ride formulating a plan. In fact, he prided himself on all the ways he had thought of to punish America once they stopped. He considered it while he was driving, but after that last brush with the semi and the brief case of road rage that America suffered, England decided not to risk it.

They pulled into a small hotel and silently carried their bags upstairs. He watched as America flopped onto the bed and he quickly crawled up on top of him.

This “punishment” was going to be fun.

Summer

As England kissed him, America couldn’t help but feel happy that he had proposed this summer road trip. True, it was a seemingly infinite amount of time spent in the car between destinations, but at the end of the day it was the little moments that counted. The way England had smiled when he had brought him his favorite candy from the gas station or the way they could play the license plate game. He was especially now that his boyfriend was on top of him, intent to “punish” him for the long drive they had driven. It was bliss.

Light

As England took in the sights with America at each stop they made on this trip he couldn’t help but feel a light inside him growing. Each moment in all of the hours they spent was precious to him. In his heart it was beginning to make up for all the moments they had wasted pretending that the other wasn’t personally important. It made up for all those missed opportunities over the many years of their lives.

As they watched the sun set on the California coast, only three words came out of their mouths, a whispered, “I love you.”
