It is one of my tasks when I go camping myself to get people to hug/smell a tree. People give you the strangest look and then they are pleasantly surprised. :)

That was really fun. Of course, America would be the type to hug trees. And it's true, those trees do smell nice; I think I've seen them in the Sierra Nevada (though it's been so long I'm not really sure)>

There is indeed a subspecies that lives in the Sierra Nevada, so it would be entirely possible.
