“Thank you for making this meal Big Brother.” said Liechtenstein, glancing up at the bright blue sky. It was peaceful here in the valley, surrounded by the peaks of the Alps. The wind blew gently through her short blonde hair. She cradled a cup of tea in her hands, provided from the thermos her brother had brought along. She glanced over at her companion. Switzerland was absentmindedly prodding at the checkered picnic blanket. As per usual, he was not looking at her.
“You’re welcome.” He continued his scrutiny of the picnic blanket as Liechtenstein took another sip of her tea before setting it aside and beginning to set out the food. It was modest and healthy. They ate in silence admiring the beauty of the Swiss landscape. When she finished she examined her adopted brother again, remembering all of the gifts he had given her in the past. He had fed her when he had had no food of his own. He had given her a place to live. He protected her from other countries that would have conquered her and made her their own. She still could not fathom exactly why he did such things but she was grateful. She scooted the picnic basket out from between them and slid towards the other nation. Switzerland noticed as she closed the distance between them.
“Liechtenstein, what...” but she cut him off with a quick kiss. She couldn’t help but smile as he turned bright red. She went back to her previous spot on the blanket and poured herself another cup of tea. She watched over the teacup as her “brother” tried to think of something to say.
“Thank you, Switzerland.” she said, and went back to her drink.
