If it was a fight they wanted, America knew that someone would give it to them. He just hated it when the fight was between his own people. It had had happened before and he was certain it would happen again, but he hated it every single time.

This fight was between the Republicans and the Democrats and everyone, including America himself, was tired of it.

He sat quietly up in the upper seating of the House of Representatives and listened to the current round of politicians try to appease constituents by reading the Constitution. He listened to their abridged reading of it, shaking his head when they realized they had skipped part of it because the pages had gotten stuck together. He cringed when a woman called out into the crowd insulting the President.

He thought back to when the document had been created in 1787 and then ratified in 1788. It had been a tumultuous time for him. He had recently separated himself from Great Britain and was still working through the simultaneous pain and joy he felt from overthrowing his overbearing “brother”. So much had happened so fast and it had been comforting when the leaders of the nation had sat down to figure out what being the United States of America actually meant.

America remembered the discussions between men that were now legendary in his own history and the worlds. All of the different plans for how the states would work together and how the would be managed. He remembered that there was contention then as well. Would his people ever agree on what it meant to be America? He hoped not, because that was what made his country great. People agreeing to disagree, trying to find the best solution for everyone, not just themselves. At least, that was the way it was supposed to be.

America smiled as he remembered Benjamin Franklin’s words on the Constitution, “There are several parts of this constitution which I do not at present approve, but I am not sure I shall never approve them.... I doubt too whether any other Convention we can obtain, may be able to make a better Constitution... It therefore astonishes me, Sir, to find this system approaching so near to perfection as it does; and I think it will astonish our enemies...”. His people would never fully agree, but maybe they could be made to remember what they were supposed to be doing. He had not wanted to emulate any other country other than himself, he wanted to be new. He hoped his politicians of today could remember that, he and his people were not the rest of the world, they were themselves in the land of opportunity.

He left the House after the reading was complete. He hoped that they would take it to heart, America hoped that it would encourage more of his people to read the document, to try and understand the words. He knew that many had forgotten, he hoped they would remember.

America smiled to himself as he walked the streets of Washington DC remembering what happened the last time a government had tried to deny the people of America what they felt was theirs. He hoped they were prepared to deal with the fight they would get.
