I have purchased 3 copies of l4d for other people. Only one of them was on discount weekend. My justification for paying full price was believing they were going to be shipping updates ala tf2.
Now I am waiting for l4d2 to be in the 20 dollar range before I buy it. I feel like a chump for believing a CEO and a project manager. heh.
I got it for about $40, and feel mildly burned. I'm willing to spend $25-$30 on this, as that's how much I paid for Through the Dark Portal.
On the upside, I've found a new way to play the game: modded 12 and 18 player servers. Nothing quite like staving off a wave of 6-9 hunters (as a group of course), or just hearing 6-9 hunters leap and then seeing most of your team get pinned while the two that were missed scramble to save everyone.
I probably would have been pissed off, but for whatever reason crap like this doesn't really bother me anymore. It should, but I guess I just don't really care what happens to Valve as long as someone out there is still making good games. If this causes a lot of people to boycott them, whatever. If L4D2 is great and in the end everyone feels like it was worth another $50, or whatever games retail for these days, then fucking rad. I really don't care.
Its pretty awesome when you purchase a prerelease game just because its original mod version was so goddamn good you feel like you want to give someone money for all the fun you had in that one. That money also buys you the ticket to the next version of the game, fuck I am stoked.
I am looking forward to seeing you in the comchair again, lets play some NS.
L4D is a good romp, but it gets too old too quickly, way too much repetition.
If they had made it with a co-op campaign with a story. Say each of your friends plays as one of the characters and you see how the shit went down. There would be some logistical problems about making everyone meet up (since it would seem more plausible if they were just survivors that ran into one another) after 1-2 hours of solo game play. That could be cool as you'd find out how each of the characters managed, where they were when it finally hit etc.
The only reason I was ever interested in Valve was because of Team Fortress Classic. I bought HL2 after that because I was so impressed with the fun that TF provided. I never finished HL2 and realized that not only did the game suck, but Valve wasn't going to be putting out games that I would probably like. I couldn't care less about Valve, but that's just me.
I don't think that HL2 sucked, but I don't think it was great either. Have you tried TF2 yet? I think L4D is wayyyyyyyyy awesomer than TF2, maybe that's because L4D offers new gameplay? That's what did it for me. CTF with different player roles is fun but TF2 got old quick for me since the gameplay was basically identical to the past iterations of TF.
I would go so far as to say that L4D is so much fun that you are doing a major disservice to yourself if you're not playing it due to silly fanboyish-related issues.

Anyway, that is just my pipe dream.
