I didn't have any interest in this since I'm an Xbox 360 fanboy and just put together a super-bitchin' gaming PC, but for those interested in picking up a PS3 TigerDirect.com has them on sale for $299.99 for the next 72 hours! Check out this link ( Read more... )

Sony is close to going bankrupt. With the launch of blueray eating shit and the ps3 being a giant money hole they need to do anything they can to get cash out of their stock on hand. I saw an article that took a look at the cash on hand that sony has (available to stock holders) and how many millions of consoles they would need to sell to catch up to microsoft and they would run out of money well before they could produce enough consoles seeing as how they are sold at a loss.

The people at the helm aren't doing many smart things right now to try and deal with this. Sony Home was probably the worst idea they could have come up with to try and attract people to the sony platform. A better patching/update system along with a better developer SDK to try and make the sony online store the itunes app store of independent developers and big label small budget games. They missed their mark and they could end up losing their shirts over it.

Good to know. I haven't been keeping track of what's up with Sony. Thanks for that.

On a related note, I also think that microsoft could have done better with the xbox360 product. Really, that thing would be 500 times more cool if they allowed modding. Instead, they put the clampdown on it.

Someone should come up with a console game that has all kinds of ports and sockets and whistles (AKA modularity) to allow for easy modding and also an easy software interface/SDK/documentation to allow for independent programming.

Well the phantom console was supposed to do that, but it turned out to be one of many investment scams put together by the president and CEO. The ps3 has a really interesting port of linux that sony allowed. I don't think it has access to the video processor, which is kind of sad.

Sony really needs to move in the opposite direction of microsoft if they want to gain traction in the console market. I think having an independent studio friendly online store would have been the way to go. Open up their SDK with the provision that anything published using that license level of the sdk needed to be distributed through sony's online store so they would take a publisher's portion of the sales rather than a simple license fee per sold copy and sdk license fee. However sony's entire IP business model contradicts that. Seeing them do that would be like watching jesus fuck satan in the ass then reach around and give him a hand job.

microsoft is about to go brick and mortar stores with their xbox and more to compete up with apple's 'coolness'. I'm sure they'll be happy to mod your xbox for mo money
